The MetroDBITan student series : Issue #017 - Jessica Tan

With her long-flowing tresses, slim-cut figure and sweet smile, DBIT Year 1 student Jessica Tan is a definite candidate to melt the hearts of many young men out there.

But what impresses me about Jessica is not just her good looks;  the petite girl is also a confident presenter and a budding entrepreneur-in-the-making.

Let's explore beyond her attractive appearance and get to know more about her! :)

Jessica, describe yourself with four different words!

I am Optimistic, Determined, Introverted and  Stubborn!

Tell us more about your school days in primary school and secondary school

Primary School

I was from Boon Lay Garden Primary School.

I was a slacker during my primary school life.  I even got myself an aggregate of 163 for PSLE!

I really hate studying and my results were always on the borderline. But my parents were very encouraging, never once did they give me stress or push me in studies.

As for CCA, I was in a "Life Skills Club", where we learnt to make DIY products such as badges and sells it during any event in school. It was definitely a good opportunity to be in touch with business-like environment since young.

Secondary School

After my PSLE, I was admitted to Boon Lay Secondary School.

In secondary school life, I could see myself changing.  My results improved unwittingly when I was in my sec 2.

I was surprised when my teacher congratulated me in front of my class, praising me for my improvement and I was the top 5 in my class. Feeling motivated, I studied smart and hard to achieve better results, and I was especially interested in mathematics, science and Principle of Accounting (POA).

Then, in Secondary 3 and 4, I earned myself the third position for my level and in my sec 5, I secured second in level position and actually lost 1 mark to be the first. I wasn't really happy, but in fact, I was quite upset with it because who doesn't want to be the best? I was rewarded with the MOE Merit Bursary in sec 2, and the MOE Edusave scholarship Secondary 3,4 and 5. I also bagged home trophies for doing well academically.

Another CCA I joined was the CyberAce Club.  CyberAce Club is a sort of hybrid club which focuses on  developing photography and IT skills in its members.  Through joining this club, I got the opportunity to learn photography skills and learned all type of technology skills such as building up my blog, and get in touched with software such as Dreamweaver.   My technology skills  were greatly boosted after joining this CCA!

I was being invited to join the Advanced Elective Module (AEM) for Entrepreneur courses offered by Singapore Polytechnic. Through this module, I earnt fundamental skills of managing a business and we were told to set up a mini bazaar and I managed to earn a bit of money through this! It was a good experience. I have also gotten myself a certificate taking part in AEM!

Share some memorable moments of childhood with family or friends

I would say that time spent together with my family and cousins were the most memorable moments of my childhood life! I grew up together with my siblings and 4 other cousins, our age gap were near, thus we do all nonsense together. There is a saying cousins are usually the first friends we have as children.  I totally agree with this statement!

Share some memorable moments of your teenage years

My most memorable teenage years is probably the day I collected my N level results because I was one of the top scholars in my school!

I can still remember vividly how I was beaming from ear to ear while being invited to the stage to collect my results with ELMAB3 of 10 points.

Her secondary school vice principals and the other N level top scholars.
Jessica was standing next to the female vice-principal.

Why did you choose DBIT course?

I chose DBIT because I strongly believe this course will provide me better opportunities in settling myself in a good career with the combination of Business and IT. As IT beomes more prevalent, more and more businesses will be more reliant on technology.  Being able to acquire both business and IT skills will boost up our readiness to be successful in business in the IT age.

Share your likes and dislikes

I like to take photos of all the beautiful moments and I like to blog as well! I think by keeping the photos in my blog help to keep track of the memories.

What is your ambition in life?

I want to set up my own business and be a young entrepreneur!

To realize my dream, I know I must study hard to achieve what I want. I need to gain all the knowledge through my education years in order to achieve my goal and to be determined in my decision.

Are you attached? If not, describe your 'dream guy'! :)

I'm not attached, haha.

'Dream guy'?  I don't think about it, let the nature takes its own course! I believe everything is fated.

Any good friends in SP?

I do have best friends in SP, they are my classmates, qiule and chuin ann! Both of them are very helpful and kind! Whenever I need help, they never fail to stand by my side and help me. I'm really thankful to know them.

Share three things or people that inspire you

Robert Kiyosaki

Robert Kiyosaki is an inspiring investor, businessman, author, motivator, financial literacy activist and an occasional financial commentator.

I was inspired by how he manages his finance and also, how helpful he is, willing to share his knowledge to everyone around the world, holding motivational talks to share his experience.

I doubt that many successful persons would be willing to share their way to becoming successful. He taught me that giving up after mistakes will only make us a loser, we learn by making mistakes. Thus with his words, I have been constantly reminding myself not to be demoralized by my own mistakes, but learn from it.

Lee Kuan Yew

Mr Lee Kuan Yew is a well-known name in Singapore.

He possesses strong leadership and is very helpful towards everyone. His strong leadership inspires me and motivates me to work hard and help every one of my peers.

Even at his age now, he is still one of the most influential politicians and serves Singapore well. I am thankful and blessed for his presence.  From him, I have learnt to be responsible, at the same time to contribute and help as many people as I can and not expecting any return.

Global Business Club (GBC)

Recently, I have joined this business club where I learnt financial education from! From GBC, I have met several VIP members and I am definitely being inspired by their journey to become a successful personnel. All of them are willing to share their knowledge and are supportive towards any interested learners. Their strong determination allows them to be successful which motivates me to work hard for my future.

Have you travelled anywhere before? If so, which countries have you been? Which country do you like most? And why?

Yes. I have travelled to Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong.

I like Hong Kong the most!  Hong Kong has really beautiful and attractive scenery and skyscrapers. Most importantly, Hong Kong is every girl's haven for shopping!

What are your favourite modules in SP?

My favourite module in SP is Social Media Marketing.

I am thankful that weĆve got an opportunity to collaborate with a real business (Bakery Box) in the society, helping them in marketing, allowing us in getting in touch with real life experience learning through it and at the same time, being able to help others in their business.

I wish to learn more in depth of business, getting involved in more real life experience!
